Icons Gallery

The inspiration to make this series of paintings came primarily from an admiration of Icons, mainly in the Byzantine and early Renaissance styles.

However, the series borrows from several sources of religious art: Buddhist, Islamic, Hindu as well as Christian Byzantine and Early Italian Renaissance.

The common elements which attracted me are:

  • a lavish use of decoration, including gold leaf
  • long traditions of formalised style and subject matter
  • extensive use of repetition and ritual
  • the integration of text and symbol
  • the function of the painting to assist spiritual practice and meditation.

My task was to integrate the different styles to show the common elements of religious art.

Text in the paintings is Sanskrit, from the Diamond Sutra; Islamic, from the Koran; Christian Cyrillic script and Korean Buddhist script...
